Jala Neti

Position : Tadasana

Practice :

  • Fill the Neti Pot with sterile lukewarm water of a temperature suitable for pouring in the nose and mix half a teaspoon of salt or sea salt to the neti pot.
  • Keep the legs apart in the standing position. Hold the neti pot in your right hand.
  • Insert the nozzle of the neti pot into the right nostril. Keep the mouth open and breathe freely through the mouth.
  • Tilt the head first slightly backwards, then forwards and side wards to the left, so that the water from the pot enters the right nostril and comes out through the left by gravity.
  • Keep breathing slowly and gently through the mouth. After the water begins to run about 30 seconds for about half a pot to flow right to left and then remove the pot from the right nostril.
  • Repeat the same on the left nostril. Before changing the side, blow out gently through both nostril to clear water and mucus from the nose.
  • Clear the nasal passage of the remaining water, blow out the water by active exhalation through alternate nostrils as in Kapalabhati.

Note :

  • To cleanse the nasal passage thoroughly, expel the breath through each nostril while holding the other nostril closed. It is important that the mouth remains open during this process to prevent water getting into the ears.
